ASMA WARSI

 Six Point One

He called me this morning, “how old did you turn?”
“I am sixty-one.”
Computer savvy as he is,
He retorted, “ You’re only 6.1”

Am I Acrobat, or Photoshop? I don’t know
Perhaps Pagemaker 6.1,
So age is only numbers,
Mindset, version, a vision.

Next year, then I’ll be 6.2,
Will I be more user-friendly?
Or more troublesome, snappy, grumpy,
Irritating, annoying, crude?
Or will I be like every version?
Promised as better, improved.

[This was an impromptu poem written by me on my birthday]

MARTY BEERS MESHBERG

Band Wagons

Jumping on the 'band wagon',
in my book,
leaves much to be desired.
Large groups and masses
such as political parties
and social causes
often require that
one must leave one's
own mind and heart
behind.
I view collective thought
clannish
and a humanistic danger.

It is easy to join causes
which ask you to sign up
to dogma's...
releasing you from true
contemplation.

I am reminded
in the Baha'i Writings,
that one must apprehend
the truth through one's
own investigation
and not through the eyes
of others.

I find myself at odds with
many causes because I refuse
to relinquish this spiritual right.

There are those
who call me brave
and courageous
and those who find reason
to call me a traitor.

I am solitary
in my quest
to remain liberated
from classification
and life's multi-peered
bucket
of pseudo-pious offences.

I am solitary here
to persevere, to giving life
to what has been proven
to be right. To carry forward
the truths that I've found
and to make that
the whole meaning
of my life.

ASMA WARSI

For Asif and Sana, on their wedding
By Asma Warsi, Aug 25, 2013

Love is in the air
scent of new flowers, and henna
enchanting, alluring
spring of life gushing.

This fascinating union
of Sharif and Hameed
adding a new daughter here
and a new son there
as Sana and Asif tie the knot.
Mothers, siblings, friends
experiencing moments of joy, ecstasy
at this blissful event.

And I am asking the Lord:
Bestow upon them, Your blessings,
unlimited abundance of love,
devotion, loyalty, trust
and all that comes with such a union.

Fill their heart and home
with laughter and harmony,

make it a heaven on earth.

WILMA SEVILLE

At Germania Park

I soak up the welcome sun
Its spring rays caressing  me
putting at ease my aches and pains

I snuggle in umbrella chair
my ears picking up the sounds
the whisper of  gentle breezes
the lake swooshing to the shore

Pen at the ready, I wait
observing what surrounds me
the chatter of talk, crunch of food
relaxing, enjoying nature.

Birds twitter, perch on branches
hop, skip in swaying grasses
feathers ruffled by the soft wind.

Gulls swoop down with haunting cries
they skim water,  and take off
unwary fish becomes their prey.

Fishing boat glides in deep water
bedecked in straw hats, two men
troll for fish in silence

Sips of clear, cold water
glide down my thirsty throat
soothing me, refreshing me

My hand reaches for my Spanish fan
brought back from Spain years ago
cream colour, red & blue flowers

I  flip open large print story book
from time to time looking up
as life goes on around me
I sit, content with my world.

On Saturday, July 13th, 2013 a summer celebration of People's Poetry and Milton Acorn's "In a Springtime Instant:  The Selected Poems:  1950-1986  was held at the Artword Artbar at 15 Colbourne Street here in Hamilton, Ontario.

The hosts, Ron Weihs and Judith Sandiford were their usual gracious and welcoming selves as the guests assembled in this very cute venue.  James Deahl was both the organizer and the Master of Ceremonies.

This two hour event was well attended.  There was lively conversation at the break time as people replenished their drinks and food. Many people renewing acquaintances and happy to be a part of this celebration.

Here are some pictures taken at the event.

Ron Weihs- our host

Judith Sandiford - our host

On this bright, sunny, and breezy day, the mood inside reflected the weather outside.  Each poet was free to choose what they wanted and the reading of Milton Acorn's work was very well done.

It also was good to hear their own individual work as everybody has a different style of writing and way of presenting things.

ALBERTO MAGSUCI

The Silent Whisperer

Can you not hear the voice
of the beloved poet
when at peace?

The worries of life
take it's toll
grinding us down
until we forget the secret whisperer.

The magic is lost
to think of beauty in prose
to write the song of life.

Away from the deafening crowd
in the stillness of the night
the voiceless silence waits
my soul, the poet of my dreams awakening
and redeem the magic which was lost....

I will paint in bright colors
I will write the lyrics to a song
a song of hope,
a song of peace.

That life is more than toiling blindly
A spirit in peace my soul cries
Kundalini awakening, my hearts desire.
