DUNDAS ART WALK - CARNEGIE GALLERY AND TOWER POETRY SOCIETY

In September, Tower poets were invited to go out to Dundas to pick a picture to write a poem about.  I participated and picked out a lovely picture and wrote a poem.

We got there early enough to go on the art walk which began at 1 p.m.  Jeff Seffinga and Fran Figge were the leaders on this walk and at each store that had exhibited the work, they stopped and read the poetry aloud.  It was very nice indeed to have it read so well.

After the art walk, we all went into the Carnegie Gallery which is now wheelchair accessible with a new elevator.

Our eyes fell on pottery, jewellery, felt work and art on the walls as we entered this lovely spot.  There was a tea table set up  with several types of tea provided by a local tea shop.   The lady was very gracious as she served this elegant beverage in delicate English tea cups.  The name of the company which provided the tea is Coco Tea, and it is on 63 Main Street in Dundas, Ontario.  Their telephone number is 905-627-7322.

People were encouraged to partake of the light refreshments provided by the Gallery - different types of cheeses, a fruit platter and different types of sweets including shortbread cookies.

The readings started shortly after 2 p.m.

WILMA SEVILLE (ArtWalk - Dundas, Ontario)

No artist name was on the picture unfortunately

This picture spoke to me as I love being near the water and just observing nature.

Here is the poem I wrote for this occasion.

Solitude

Sun rays shimmer on calm waters
cane in hand, I tap my way
walking gingerly down windy pathway
towards the empty wharf and chair
which beacons me to solitude

Setting sun spells peace, harmony
the cry of loons on the lake
eases me, I drink in beauty

Birds rise up, fly in formation
I feel their freedom, unity
as they wing their way and caw
their sound drifting off - they leave

The ghosts of my past come gently
husband, children and  hound dog
all present in my memory

Shouts of long ago resound
my little ones jump off wharf
hound dog follows close after
their father, ever watchful - near

Alone now, husband long dead
grown up children, with children
in other places - far away
solitary, I sit with memories

ED WOODS

A Mother's Day First

Mom preferred a flight
as celebration
sightseeing over Toronto
then fish and chips
at the flight center picnic table

lush green landscape
between runways
scented of crops grown
and  fuel spent

propellers droned
tires squealed
happy people came and went
then a last tea before home

today
Mother’s Day
flowerless and motherless
no smiles or stories
of her latest antics

I salute Mom’s picture
and lock of hair

*Editor's note:  Ed's Mother passed away recently as this is a tribute to her.

SUSAN DAVIS

Susan David launched her new book "SWIMS" today at the Unitarian church on Dundurn Street.

I was very pleased to see such a good crowd on this rather dismal looking day.  The atmosphere inside was warm and welcoming with a lovely buffet set up for the guests.

Susan's new book is beautiful with its art work and lovely poetry and well worth purchasing..

SWIMS
Susan read from her book for a short period of time which was well received by those assembled.

A lovely afternoon spent with compatible people.

ASMA WARSI

 Six Point One

He called me this morning, “how old did you turn?”
“I am sixty-one.”
Computer savvy as he is,
He retorted, “ You’re only 6.1”

Am I Acrobat, or Photoshop? I don’t know
Perhaps Pagemaker 6.1,
So age is only numbers,
Mindset, version, a vision.

Next year, then I’ll be 6.2,
Will I be more user-friendly?
Or more troublesome, snappy, grumpy,
Irritating, annoying, crude?
Or will I be like every version?
Promised as better, improved.

[This was an impromptu poem written by me on my birthday]

MARTY BEERS MESHBERG

Band Wagons

Jumping on the 'band wagon',
in my book,
leaves much to be desired.
Large groups and masses
such as political parties
and social causes
often require that
one must leave one's
own mind and heart
behind.
I view collective thought
clannish
and a humanistic danger.

It is easy to join causes
which ask you to sign up
to dogma's...
releasing you from true
contemplation.

I am reminded
in the Baha'i Writings,
that one must apprehend
the truth through one's
own investigation
and not through the eyes
of others.

I find myself at odds with
many causes because I refuse
to relinquish this spiritual right.

There are those
who call me brave
and courageous
and those who find reason
to call me a traitor.

I am solitary
in my quest
to remain liberated
from classification
and life's multi-peered
bucket
of pseudo-pious offences.

I am solitary here
to persevere, to giving life
to what has been proven
to be right. To carry forward
the truths that I've found
and to make that
the whole meaning
of my life.
